A few additions to my photo gallery of new and redesigned 2012 cars:
- 2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
- 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class
- Range Rover Evoque
- 2012 Volkswagen Golf R
- 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan
Now, I'm sure I'm not the only one whose interest is piqued by the Golf R -- a follow-on to the 2008 Volkswagen R32. That car had a V6 engine and a hotter suspension than the GTI, but it was only available with Volkswagen's DSG twin-clutch automatic transmission. As fantastic as the DSG is, I thought that was a mistake; I had a chance to drive a Euro-spec R32 with a manual and it was a lot more fun. Apparently, Vee Dub agrees -- the Golf R will come to the States exclusively with an old-fashioned stick-shift, even though the DSG is offered in Europe. Oh, and the engine? How about a souped-up version of the 2-liter turbo found in the GTI? No word on power output for the US version, but the Euro-spec car has 270 hp, 20 more than the old R32. I may have to sneak this one into my Ten 2012 Cars Worth Waiting For list... -- Aaron Gold
