I'm gearing up to take the kids to see their grandparents for spring break. I'll be making the trip in a 2012 Mazda5 minivan, which is rated at 28 MPG highway -- but even so, with gas here in Los Angeles well above $4/gallon, I'm not looking forward to filling the tank. Southwest Airlines has fares starting at $59, and if we weren't taking the dog with us, I'd be sorely tempted to fly.
