Bicycling in NYC

Last week, Zipcar announced a move that will almost surely appeal to its outdoorsy customers. With sunny days ahead, Zipcar plans to tap into the need for exercise and open-air recreation by adding some complimentary items to 20 of its Ford Escapes in New York City.

As part of Zipcar's partnership with Bike New York, the car sharing company will outfit Escapes located in Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY with Yakima bicycle racks. In addition, Zipcar will affix Empire Passports, which allow complimentary access to more than 50 New York State Parks, to the 20 Escapes.

Charlie Irons, general manager of Zipcar New York, had this to say of the bicycle rack and park passes:
Zipcar is constantly working to give our members greater access to their local resources. Our programs with Yakima, the New York State Parks and Bike New York will give Zipsters more opportunities to engage in the active lifestyles they love by allowing them to take advantage of the surrounding state parks and utilizing their bicycles more, while also living a green and sustainable lifestyle.
Aside from the obvious advantages over typical rentals, Zipcar claims that when vehicle owners switch to car sharing, that change reduces CO2 emissions and resulted in 482,000 less tons emitted in 2009 alone.
