USDA: Advanced biofuel payouts will create jobs, jobs and even more jobs

Let's create jobs while concurrently expanding the U.S. output of advanced biofuels, says Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.Just days ago, the USDA announced that its will fork over some money to more than 160 energy producers in 41 states to support the expansion of advanced biofuels. As Secretary Vilsack says, this is really mainly a job-creating scheme:
The payments are authorized under the Bioenergy Program for Advanced Biofuels and will be made available only to firms looking to increase output of advanced biofuels. Payments are based strictly on the amount of biofuel a recipient produces from renewable biomass. Corn-based ethanol producers can't apply, as that type of biofuel is not considered "advanced."Renewable energy production will create tens of thousands of direct, American jobs; thousands more indirect jobs, and clean electricity to power millions of homes. The payments I am announcing today represent the continuing commitment of the Obama administration to work with producers to provide the biofuel necessary to reduce our nation's dependence on foreign energy sources.
One example of a BPAB payment is the $98,507 given to Ever Cat Fuels to help offset the costs of producing 881,000 gallons of biodiesel from plant oils and animal fats in Minnesota. The USDA says the payout to Ever Cat will create 20 full-time jobs. Sure, 20 may be next to nothing on a national level, but you don't get to tens of thousands of jobs without starting somewhere.

Global spending on advanced oil, gas exploration tech to hit $10.17 billion in 2011

Although the Arctic has incredible potential energy resources - the United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates 90 billion barrels of undiscovered oil and 1,668 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered gas - extracting that fuel will be costly.
A calculated and cautious approach to exploitation will be vital to optimal development, according to the UK-based analytical firm Visiongain. Due to the lack of geological data in the Arctic, oil and gas exploration and extraction will be a high-risk, massive-reward venture in which only the most experienced and wealthy of companies will compete.
Visiongain predicts that global spending on advanced oil and gas exploration technologies, including those used in the Arctic, will exceed $10.17 billion in 2011 and soar to exorbitant levels by 2021. Why all this spending? Well, as the world shifts to discovering hidden oil and gas deposits, the exploration industry will be required to use advanced surveying methods and outrageously expensive equipment. This kind of energy doesn't come cheap.

Hyundai working on fuel-saving 10-speed automatic
What's eight plus two? If you guessed ten, then you'd be right. As in, right on the mark in answering a related question: How many forward gears will Hyundai's next-generation automatic transmission feature?
Automotive News reports that Koren automaker Hyundai will skip past nine speeds and go straight for a double-digit ten-speed trans as soon as 2014. Word is Hyundai will initially equip only its Genesis and Equus sedans with the ten-speed unit to bump up the fuel economy rating of both vehicles, but the trickle-down effect most likely means we'll see the ten-speed slushbox in additional Hyundai models at some later date.
If this report pans out to be true, then Hyundai is truly taking the uncharted path in the world of multi-speed transmissions. Plenty of OEMs are working on or have eight-speeds out there, but ten?
